Brilliant:

The National – High Violet

Arcade Fire – The Suburbs

Almost Brilliant:

Frightened Rabbit – The Winter of Mixed Drinks

Tokyo Police Club – Champ

Good:

Wolf Parade – Expo '86

Jonsi – Go

Surfer Blood – Astro Coast

Xavier Rudd & Izintaba – Koonyum Sun

Titus Andronicus – The Monitor

Sun Kil Moon – Admiral Fell Promises

Maximum Balloon – Maximum Balloon

The Gaslight Anthem – American Slang

Disappointing:

Wintersleep – New Inheritors

MGMT – Congratulations

…I'm sure I've forgotten some and still have a pile of albums to listen to, but those are ones that have made an impression (one way or another) so far.

I'd kick Titus up pretty far on the list.

And agree with Wintersleep.

And be completely apathetic toward everything else on it.

I did like Arcade Fire's new album. I think that makes me a hipster, though.

MGMT's new album was OK. I bought it off Amazon because some friends thought I'd like it. Haven't really listened to it much.

I would add the following in various spots Good and higher:

  • Mumford and Sons – Sigh No More
  • John Mark McMillan – The Medicine
  • Broken Bells – Broken Bells
  • Jennifer Knapp – Letting Go

The following are hit or miss depending on your tastes:

  • Jars of Clay – The Shelter
  • Barenaked Ladies – All In Good Time

And that's the majority of my music purchases for the year so far.

I like these things:

Laura Veirs – July Flame. Really lovely.

The Books – The Way Out. I've been waiting for it for five years and though it took a while to grow on me, there's some wonderful tracks.

The National – High Violet. Their albums are always a bit hit and miss for me, but this one has some great, great songs. Lemonworld, yes. And the guitar part that comes in halfway through Terrible Love gets me very excited.

Also I didn't start listening to Dirty Three – Cinder until this year, so I'm going to count that as new.

Agree on Lemonworld, probably my favourite song so far this year.

I forgot to mention I'm seeing them at the end of November. Should be good fun.

Up in the brilliant column you also need Mumford & Sons – Sigh No More.

On Good you need Jesse Malin & The St Marks Social – Love It To Life.

And for Disappointing you need to add the new Muse album on there… and I fully agree on that new MGMT, what the fuck.

The Tallest Man On Earth/The Wild Hunt – Fucking fantastic. It's a swedish man playing beautiful folk music that gets compared pretty much non-stop to Bob Dylan. My favorite album in a very, very long time.

The Walkmen/Lisbon – Still growing on me, but it's The Walkmen, so it's sort of a no-brainer for me. I will love it after a couple more listenings.

Tokyo Police Club/Champ – I was pretty excited for this one, since I liked their first lp and ep, but it's sort of 'meh' so far.

Telekinesis/Self Titled – A strange mix of tracks, some sounding like Elliott Smith with others sounding like Phoenix, but always enjoyable.

Klaxons/Surfing The Void – The Klaxons are just fun. I doubt I'll be listening to it a month from now, but for now it's getting a ton of play.

Les Savy Fav/Root For Ruin – Another no-brainer for me.

Menomena/Mines – Even better than their first two albums. And I think it technically came out in 2009, but Brent Knopf's side project, Ramona Falls deserves a mention. Great album, and the video for "I Say Fever" is kind of brilliant.

Miles Kurowsky/Desert Of Shallow Effects – Needs no introduction to some here, but anyone who hasn't gotten this yet needs to

Murder By Death/Good Morning Magpie – Every time Murder By Death releases a new album, my gut feeling is "They've taken whatever it is they're doing just a little too far this time", and then I end up liking it. I'm still in phase 1. Phase 2 is coming, sure as can be though.

I have never been able to get into The National, but it sounds like I'm gonna have to check this new album out, eh? And I think I skipped Titus based on the bit I read about them, but perhaps I'll check them out too.

Sluggard, with regards to the National I've always really liked certain songs from their album but never thought they were amazing the whole way through.

Have you heard The River from the Tallest Man on Earth's new EP? It's reeeeeally good. I saw him play about this time last year and everyone there was an uberfan singing along to every single line.

I saw Mumford & Sons in concert last Monday. It was awesome.

A band called Cadillac Sky opened for them. I picked up their album Letters In The Deep and it belongs somewhere under Brilliant/Almost Brilliant/Good. (Exactly where depends on how much you like bluegrass.)

I just started listening to Everything in Between by No Age and that's got some nice tracks on it (Life Prowler, Glitter, Depletion). Also the new Mogwai album leaked and the first few tracks are very promising.

Awesome!! I was just thinking of posting about this on the way home from work tonight.

I'm not sure what I've been listening to is new or not, for this year, but it's been new to me this year so I'd like to share some of my top albums of this year.

The National – High Violet

Anyone that has me as a friend on Facebook knows I spam the hell out of this album, but this is such an amazing album. My favorite album of 2010 hands down. A couple of my favorite songs are Conversation 16, Terrible Love, Bloodbuzz Ohio, Runaway… I think I might be able to list all the songs actually.

Deftones – Diamond Eyes

It's a tie between this and The National for me, after two very passable albums, they come back with this raw, beautiful fucking album. Rocket Skates is one of my favorites.

EDIT: Decided to post YouTube Videos for all my picks. I feel like it helps point out/or share a particular favorite track from what your posting with someone too lazy to look up the music. For instance, after listening to Dutch on Riv's post, I'm definitely checking out that album.

Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavillon

Arcade Fire – The Suburbs

Dr. Dog – Fate

The Octopus Project – One Ten Hundred Thousand Million

She & Him – Volume Two

Jonsi – Go

I've also been listening to a lot of soundtracks.

500 Days of Summer Soundtrack

Red Dead Redemption Soundtrack

Mass Effect 2 Soundtrack

Tron: Legacy Soundtrack

Inception Soundtrack

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Soundtrack

And again, yeah some of these are from 2009 or farther back.
